According to YNet News, Kadima MK Shaul Mofaz spent the last few months working on his political vision with a team of experts. The Israeli Initiative has found that these "experts" have not spent enough time researching; while there are some positive aspects to Mofaz's proposal, it also has some major holes.
The central idea of Mofaz's plan is to establish a Palestinian state that will have temporary borders, which will eventually expand to at least 92% of Judea and Samaria. He said "it's time that the Palestinians prove they are capable of ruling."
Mofaz and his so-called experts are ignoring the fact that the Palestinians have proven over and over again that they are, in fact, incapable of ruling. The Palestinian Authority has allowed Islamic fundamentalism to take control, financing suicide bombers and educating its youth to hate Israel and deny its right to exist. Senior PA officials have also pocketed enormous sums of money donated by various countries. Granting the Palestinian Authority a sovereign state would be an obstacle to peace and a danger to the entire region.
Mofaz's proposal to clear out the 65,000 Israelis living in isolated settlements is especially perilous. The compensation Mofaz is offering to the evacuees is not sufficient to make up for providing an opening for Hamas to gain control, as was the precedent of events following the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. Mofaz is very naïve if he thinks his plan will change 'the entire atmosphere' in the region.
Despite the obvious drawbacks to his plan, Mofaz should be commended for his effort to annex what he calls major settlement blocs. However, this is not enough. Only Israeli sovereignty from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean can guarantee the continuation of Israel's existence as a Jewish state and effectively preserve stability in the region. What Israel needs is an alternative to the various two-state solutions that have been tried and failed, not another version of the 'land for peace' formula that Mofaz has proposed.
