Anger in Jordan following McCain's proposal to settle the Palestinian refugees there
18/06/2008
The 'AlJazeera' news channel reports that there were irate reactions to the speech of Robert Kahan, the political adviser of the Republican candidate in the USA elections, John McCain, in political circles in Jordan, that McCain believes that Jordan is the natural homeland of the Palestinians and will provide the best solution to the refugee problem. In his speech in front of thousands of students at New York University, Kahan said that there is a Palestinian majority in Jordan and that it is natural for the majority to rule in its country.
In response, the head of the Committee for Foreign Affairs in the Jordanian government, Mohammad Abu Hadib called upon the Jordanian government to invite the American Ambassador in Amman and to demand clarifications regarding the above comments. Abu Hadib condemned the Jordanian government's silence and added that the committee invited the Foreign Minister, Salah AlBashir to publish an immediate response to these comments. Abu Hadib also demanded to amend the official Jordanian rhetoric and to request the total liberation of Palestine from the Mediterranean sea to the Jordan River.
The leader of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan, Hamaam Said, said that there is nothing new in the words of the political adviser and that they strengthen the American positions which support the Zionist plan at the regime's expense. He added that his organization will stand at the forefront of those defending Jordan, its existence and its independence, against the American - Zionist plan. Hamaam called for decision-makers in Jordan to reconsider the options at their disposal and to become closer to the "forces of opposition".
A senior parliamentary official in Jordan said that the government was "stunned into shock" following the declarations, but it was likely that they are directed to the American public and serve McCain's election battle.

About the King of Jordan/Palestine
|

The truth that Jordan is Palestine should not be a worrysome matter for the King of Jordan. What worries him, of course, is that he is not a Palestinian.
First, what of it? The King of England happens to be German. If that is acceptable to her people, and similarly, to King Abdullah's, who are we to complain? If it is not acceptable to his people, trying to conceal the truth is doomed in any case.
Second, no one is a Palestinian, really. Such a people is a creation out of whole cloth. Most of them are descended from immigrants during the Mandate, the same as most of the Jews. The criteria of UNRWA itself defining "Palestinian refugee" is that he lived in Palestine for two years before fleeing. Two whole years! And they never even had to prove the fact. Such a deeply rooted people! No one ever heard of such a people until after 1967.
Third, the election of Hamas is clear denial of a desire to be a people. Hamas is not a nationalist movement. It is anti-nationalist Islamist.
Why are we worrying about the "Palestinian" identity?
